Give the Gift of Memories: True Memory Project Exhibiting at SXSW 2019

AUSTIN, Texas, March 7, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Tohokushinsha Film Corporation will exhibit the True Memory Project at SXSW 2019 in Austin, Texas beginning March 10, 2019. This project is a novel attempt to digitally record a person's lifestyle.

Countless memories fill our minds. We film, record, and compile these memories so they can be readily accessed and gifted to others. Sharing these memories strengthens the ties between us.

A New Way to Present a Farewell Gift

The idea of this project is to provide a spatial documenting service utilizing an interactive 360° video.

True Memory will digitize deep memories that are taken from residents' rooms in video, audio and photographic format that are then laid out in a VR space. However, True Memory offers much more than just a 360° video: Click around to find your family recipe book in a drawer, browse through your parents' book collection, or listen closely and you will hear the music that often played throughout the house. True Memory is like holding an entire home in the palm of your hand. Moreover, True Memory is not only a tool to store digitized memories for yourself, but it can also be a priceless gift to pass on to your children or grandchildren.

Send Old Memories Forward

The project idea originated from questions we asked ourselves as a film production company.  We wondered how we could help people who face the difficulty of sorting out possessions of a deceased relative, or whether we could address an issue associated with the particularly Japanese problem of abandoned homes, a by-product of urban lifestyle trends and the shift away from multi-generational housing. When older generations depart, memories associated with their family homes are lost forever.

As this service develops further, we envisage that it could act as an archive of humanity that people 1,000 years from now can view to gain an intimate sense for what it was like to live during our time.

The content of the exhibition is from real families who actually used the service and agreed to share their memories. For this reason, the data will only be shared on a limited basis. Therefore, you will not be able to access this online. You will only be able to experience True Memory at our exhibit, so we hope you will visit us at SXSW. Visitors will also be able to enjoy this purely as a documentary film about the universal theme of "family" featuring a typical Japanese family.
